Getting children registered for our Confirmation program in one place at one time proved nearly impossible. In response, I began developing an online Confirmation preparation program in early 2016 using the virtual reality platform Second Life. After more than 1,800 hours of development, the program was ready to launch in 2018. Virtual environments have advanced significantly over the past seven years, and I hope others in the religious community have since recognized and embraced their potential as powerful educational tools.
The way it worked
At a predetermined time each week, the Confirmation students and I — each at our own home computer connected to the Internet and represented by an avatar, our digital representation — met together in Second Life. There, we engaged in live group discussions and role-playing activities.
